PLAYING CORNER AT HOME/ IN SCHOOL

Planning and organizing Learning corners: At home

← Back to Lesson

At home: For planning and organizing a learning corner consider the following:

  1. Have one dedicated area for the child’s learning space.
  2. Keep the racks at the height of the child’s eye level, so that they can see and reach it easily.
  3. Make sure the area is colorful and bright with lots of natural light, if not then light up the area with artificial light such that the corner is well lit.
  4. Have material that caters to different learning opportunities i.e. provide science experiment materials, objects to sort and classify, charts, art and craft materials, role playing materials.
  5. Organize the materials on shelves and racks by labeling them, this makes it easier for the child to pick up the materials and keep them back as well.
  6. Make the area comfortable with cushions, child-size tables, and chairs.
  7. Make sure to add as many books as possible in the corner. From picture books, storybooks, comics to encyclopedias.
  8. Let the child explore the different materials in their corner, ask them to talk about their experiences with the materials. Let them question the different uses of the materials in their corner.
  9. Every once in a while trying to change the materials, only if possible.
  10. Most important of all, make sure to keep all hazardous materials out of their reach as there may be times when the child is unsupervised. For example, objects that are sharp, objects that could cause a fire, small objects that could pose choking hazards. Keep their learning environment safe and non-hazardous
