Restructuring the classroom

← Back to Lesson

Observe the three pictures below.

Which classroom do you think helps children to move and learn from each other?

Which classroom provides students the opportunity to interact with the environment?

Which classroom provides space to the teacher to walk to the groups and help them learn?

As we all know students must work in groups, students should work by themselves and also with the environment. Teachers also must be able to go around and help learners learn the concepts.

We should restructure the class in such a way that it must provide opportunities student-students interaction or student-teacher interaction such that,

  • Each student must have enough space to learn, in groups, or with peers.
  • Students should have easy access to materials.
  • Teacher/facilitator must have space to move between tables and also sit with the learners if needed.
  • Space must accommodate multi-level learners.

While restructuring the classroom we must keep in mind that the physical environment required for the learner movement within the environment, learner interaction with the environment must be the priority.

Let us learn more about how the physical, social and emotional environment and the interactional environment is designed in the topics further.
